Blue Jays try to gain ground on AL East rivals

Tonight American League predictions, written by Olivier:
*number 1 indicates road team win, number two home team win with respective pecentage to win the match.

Yankees (Burnett) @ Blue Jays (Cecil) 1 55%
Burnett allowed five runs over 7 2/3 innings in a 5-1 loss May 12, 2009,
at Toronto as a big crowd showered him with boos. The right-hander also went 1-0 with a 3.46 ERA in two home starts against the Blue Jays last year. Burnett has won his last two outings. Toronto starter Brett Cecil is 3-0 with a 1.66 ERA in his last three outings. The left-hander should be tested Friday after going 0-1 with an 11.25 ERA in two starts against the Yankees as a rookie last year. Yankees will win game 1.

Red Sox (Bucholz) @ Orioles (Tillman) 2 55%
The Orioles have a difficult assignment Friday against red-hot Clay Bucholz, who is 4-0 with a 1.32 ERA in his last four starts. Buchholz is 3-2 with a 4.59 ERA in six starts against Baltimore, but he's surrendered one run in the last two outings. Tillman didn't receive a decision in a 5-2 loss at Toronto on Saturday, yielding two runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings. He has never faced the Red Sox. Orioles have good chances of taking game 1.

Rays (Davis) @ Rangers (Wilson) 1 55%
Texas starters went 5-0 with a 2.68 ERA at home against Tampa Bay last season. While Texas' 18-9 home record is tied for the second-best mark in the AL, Tampa Bay is a major league-best 21-6 on the road. Wilson is 0-2 with a 9.56 ERA in his last three outings. Texas will face Tampa Bay starter Wade Davis for the first time. The right-hander is 2-1 with a 2.49 ERA in four road starts.

Indians (Masterson) @ Whitesox (Danks) 2 65%
Danks would like to end a funk in which he has lost four of five starts. Though he has a 1.96 ERA in five home starts this year, Danks has never beaten the Indians in Chicago. He is 0-3 with a 6.15 ERA against them at home and 3-5 overall. Masterson tries again for his first victory since Aug. 20 in a bid to end a personal 11-game losing streak. Masterson is 0-1 in two starts versus the White Sox this season.

Tigers (Sherzer) @ Royals (Chen) 1 60%
Scherzer (2-4, 6.42 ERA) opened his first AL campaign with six scoreless innings in Kansas City on April 7. When he was sent to Triple-A Toledo on May 15, the right-hander was 0-3 with a 13.50 ERA in his previous four outings. Chen moved into the rotation for an injured Gil Meche, allowed one run and two hits over four innings Sunday. Chen is 0-2 with a 7.24 ERA in five career starts against the Tigers, while Scherzer is 1-1 with a 2.12 ERA in three matchups versus the Royals.

Twins (Baker) @ Athletics (Braden) 1 55%
The Athletics will try to defeat Minnesota Twins starter Scott Baker for the first time in five tries when the teams begin a weekend series. Baker is 4-0 with a 3.24 ERA in four career starts, with three of those victories in Oakland. Baker, however, has been vulnerable on the road this year, going 1-3 with a 5.86 ERA in five outings. Braden is 3-2 with a 2.14 ERA in six starts at home, where he threw a perfect game against Tampa Bay on May 9. Braden is 0-1 with a 2.81 ERA in four career starts against the Twins.

Angels (Saunders) @ Mariners (Snell) 2 55%
Joe Saunders, set to take the mound for the Angels in the opener of this three-game set, faced Seattle on Sunday and had one of his worst starts of the season. The left-hander is 6-0 with a 2.93 ERA in his last nine starts versus the Mariners. Ian Snell is 0-2 with a 7.04 ERA in three starts against the Angels. Snell is 0-1 with a 4.00 ERA in two starts since rejoining the rotation.
