Tonight American League predictions, written by Olivier:
*number 1 indicates road team win, number two home team win with respective pecentage to win the match. Tigers (Scherzer) @ Whitesox (Danks) 2 55%
The White Sox hope John Danks (4-5, 3.60 ERA) can provide another strong outing as he tries to avoid a third straight loss in this contest. After going 3-0 with a 1.85 ERA in his first five starts, Danks is 1-5 with a 5.25 ERA in his past six.
Looking to avoid a third straight loss to Detroit, the left-hander is 2-3 with a 4.10 ERA in eight starts versus the Tigers. The White Sox face Detroit's Scherzer (2-5, 6.66) for the first time.
Angels (Santana) @ Athletics (Cahill) 1 55%
Santana (6-3, 3.29 ERA) looks to continue his recent dominance overall and against the A's in the finale between the AL West rivals. Santana allowed one run in six innings of an 11-2 win at Seattle on Saturday to improve 5-0 with a 1.80 ERA since losing to the Mariners on May 9. The right-hander has been even better during his career against the A's, going 11-2 with a 1.54 ERA in 16 starts. Cahill (4-2, 3.21) takes the ball for the A's in this contest as he looks to bounce back from his first loss since May 16. The right-hander is 1-1 with a 3.04 ERA in four starts against Los Angeles.
Yankees (Burnett) @ Orioles (Arrieta) 1 65%
A.J. Burnett hasn't allowed an earned run in two victories over Baltimore in 2010 and will try to lead the Yankees to a three-game sweep. He is 11-2 with a 4.41 ERA in 15 career outings and 5-0 with a 3.89 ERA in seven career starts at Camden Yards. Arrieta will make his major league debut. He went 6-2 with a 1.85 ERA in 12 appearances with Triple-A Norfolk this season.
Red Sox (Lester) @ Indians (Talbot) 1 65%
Jon Lester looks to win his eighth consecutive decision and remain unbeaten in seven career starts against the Indians. Lester has pitched like a Cy Young Award candidate since his last loss April 18 against Tampa Bay, going 7-0 with a 1.29 ERA in nine starts, but he has a 6.06 ERA in three outings at Cleveland. Talbot's only appearance against the Red Sox came in relief while with Tampa Bay, giving up four runs in three innings.
Blue Jays (Cecil) @ Rays (Davis) 1 60%
Brett Cecil will take the ball in the series finale. The second-year left-hander has allowed a total of five runs in 29 2/3 innings over his last four starts, winning all of them while holding opponents to a .170 average. Davis (5-5, 5.03) will try to bounce back after allowing a season-high eight runs in 3 1/3 innings in a 9-6 loss at Texas on Friday, the second time in his last three starts that he has failed to make it out of the fourth. The right-hander, who's never faced Toronto, has given up eight home runs in his last five starts.
Mariners (Rowland-Smith) @ Rangers (Hunter) 2 60%
Tommy Hunter looks to build on an impressive 2010 debut. In his second major league start, Hunter, after beginning the season on the disabled list with an oblique strain then spending time in the minors, will try to lead Texas to the victory. Despite a 1-2 record against the Mariners, he posted a 2.59 ERA in four starts. Rowland-Smith takes the mound after limiting the Angels to one run in five innings. Rowland-Smith has a 1.04 ERA in eight appearances (seven in relief) against the Rangers.
Royals (Chen) @ Twins (Baker) 2 70%
Baker will try to win his fourth straight start against the Royals. The right-hander is 4-1 with a 3.49 ERA in six starts at Minnesota's new home, including 3-0 with a 2.42 ERA in the last four. He improved to 8-1 with a 2.79 ERA in his last 10 outings against the Royals. Bruce Chen will make his third start of the year for Kansas City after going 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA in the first two. The veteran left-hander has made 10 relief appearances to go with his lone career start against the Twins in 2004. He has a 5.75 ERA against Minnesota.
